SWIMMING

INTERMEDIATE AND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS SOME FAST TIMES RECORDED W. J. JARVIS’S BRILLIANT EFFORTS The outstanding feature of some very fine swimming at the Otago intermediate and junior championships in the Municipal Baths last night was the excellent performance of the St. Clair representative, W. J- Jarvis, who added further to his laurels by winning the 100yds intermediate boys’ championship and also the 220yds intermediate boys’ title, and in the former event he put up the fastest time ever done by an Otago swimmer, irrespective of class, and incidentally proved the first Otago man to break the minute for 100yds. His time was 59sec, only four-fifths of a second outside the New Zealand intermediate record, put up by N. Crump in the faster Auckland water last year. There is little doubt that Jarvis would have broken the record had he not hit the number rope at the start and lost fully a second as a result. Indeed, as it was, he was easing up at the finish, though he won in convincing manner, doing likewise in the 220yds, in which his time was 2mm 47 3-ssec. In the latter race lie glided through the water iu effortless fashion and did , not appear to exert himself unduly, but just what performances may be expected of him this season was indicated by his beautifully smooth swimming in the hundred, his long reach, utilised to the best advantage, and even pull, and a well co-ordinated log action. ‘Jarvis has improved considerably since last year, and tins was shown by the wav ho held Geddes over 100yds, though Geddes put up. just as good time as he did last season. The entries were hardly so good as was anticipated, but the swimming generally was of a high standard, and a fair attendance of spectators witnessed many spirited races. Although beaten by W. J. Jarvis in both 100yds and 220yds free-stylo events, Reg. Geddes was not discredited, and in the TOOyds intermediate boys’ breast-stroke championship he won in 77 2-ssec—only a second slower than his New Zealand record and 2 4-ssec faster than his time of last year. It was an impressive performance, especially as Geddes is undoubtedly not yet in his best condition. C. Elliott, who swam second to Geddes, put up a very good showing. The intermediate boys’ diving championship was won by A. Williams, who gave a promising display, securing a good flight, and showed more finish than his opponent. Williams is a much improved diver. Contested for the first time under international rules, this event produced quite a fair standard, and some of Williams’s dives were very well executed indeed. " The men’s 220yds championship resulted in a good win for J. .0. Byrnes, who took the title from V. Newall in 2min 46 3-ssec, Byrnes swimming a confident race throughout. He was in good trim, and held command all the way. In the intermediate girls’ division Miss W. Newall won the 100yds freestyle title in 75 l-Ssec, and should be capable of improving considerably on this t time, as she was swimming very well. Miss M. Pockson registered the good time of 65 l-ssec in winning the 75yds breast-stroke event, and in •the junior boys’ 100yds championship the New Zealand champion, S. Jarvis, had no difficulty in winning as he liked m 69 l-ssec, ■ which was 4 l-ssec better than the time he returned in winning the New Zealand title last year. He gave a very impressive display. The junior girls’,. 50yds was nicely won by Miss A. Gillies, and Miss O. Buckland gave a very pleasing exhibition to win the junior girls’ breast-stroke event. The most amusing novelty staged in Dunedin for a long time was the clever burlesque race put on by J. Benfield, E. P. Leeden, and O. Holland, whose original efforts had the crowd in a constant roar of laughter. Handicap events added to interest in the programme, the intercluh relay handicap being won by the Dunedin No. 5 team. The programme was put through with despatch, the superintendent being Mr J. L. M'lndoe. Mr A. Findlay was the referee, Messrs E. H. James, S. Brown, D. Bannatyne, and J. L. MTndoe (swimming judges) ; Messrs E. G. James; J. L. M'lndoe, W. H, Matthews, and Mrs T. Thomson (diving judges); starter, Mr W. A. Jenkins; check starters, Messrs J. Swan and F. Beauchamp; calculator, starter’s and timekeeper’s steward, Mr N. M. Sutherland; timekeepers, Messrs T. P. Williamson, A. Greig, and F. J. Townsend; Press steward, Mr B. Leslie; and rope stewards, Messrs W. Williams and D. T. Woodfield. Members of the centre and clubs also filled other positions capably. Results: —
