NORFOLK ISLAND BANANAS
A CURIOUS DEVELOPMENT Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright CANBERRA, November 9. (Received November 9, at 8.45 a.m.) A special ‘ Gazette ’ was issued yesterday announcing the prohibition of the export of bananas from Norfolk Island. Mr C. W. Marr (Minister of Health) explained that there was an arrangement whereby the islanders exported 1,500 cases of bananas to New Zealand every six weeks. Yesterday being export day one grower attempted to steal a march on his fellow-exporters by hurriedly placing aboard the vessel the full consignment of 1,500 cases, belonging to himself and a few friends. The other growers were left with their fruit, and were compelled to seek the aid of the Federal Government, which immediately promulgated the prohibition order. Mr Marr added that the ship’s captain immediately sot about unloading the bananas in order to escape demurrage charges.
