HOLLYWOOD, November 5

Miss Belle Bennett, probably one of tho best-known portrayers of mother roles on the screen, died on Friday night after an illness of many months; aged forty-one years.

[Born in 1891 of theatrical parents in the United States, Miss Bennett had early stage experience in the tent shows run by her father. She first married when little more than a child. After a long struggle she attained comparative success on the stage, and then took up screen work, playing leading roles with the old Triangle Company during 1914. Following the war she returned to the stage and remained on it until she returned to the films, appearing in ‘ Playing With Souls ’ and ‘ Potash Perlmutter in Hollywood. 1 It was not until 1925, however, when she played the title part in ‘ Stella Dallas,’ that she established her reputation as a player of psychological emotional roles. Other silent films in which she was seen were ‘ Reckless Lady,’ ‘ The Fourth Commandment,’ * The Lily,’ and ‘ Mother Machree.’ Her only talkie seen in this city was ‘ Courage.’ In private life Miss Bennett knew much tragedy. Her first child died in babyhood; her second, a military cadet, died at the age of eighteen, a few days before she commenced work on ‘ Stella Dallas.’ She adopted a child, who also followed a military career. Her second husband was Fred. Windermere, the producer.]
