N.Z. GOLF TOURNEY

SHAW RETAINS OPEN TITLE DUNCAN RUNNER-UP [Per United Press Association.] HEIIETAUNGA, November 5. The New Zealand golf championship tournament was continued at Heretaunga this morning. The north-wester continued, but carried rain squalls, which made the conditions moro trying than hitherto. The gallery attached itself to Shaw and Collins. Shaw played well, and Collins proved a worthy partner, doing the round in 75, including brilliant 2’s at the third and ninth. Shaw went out in 35 and back in 37 for 72, his figures being: Out—4, 4,4, 4,3, 5,3, 4, 4. In—4, 5,4, 5,4, 4,3, 4, 4. Coming in he took three putts at the thirteenth and at the fifteenth. The best round camo from Sime, who, after an outward trip of 38, came back brilliantly in 33, getting 3’s at the tenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, and seventeenth. His second was 30ft from the pin at the seventeenth, and he ran down a great putt. His card read: — Out—6, 5,3, 4,3, 4,4, 5, 4. In—3, 5,4, 4,3, 3,4, 3, 4. A. D. S. Duncan again was right on his game and did the round in 73. He started with a 5, and followed this with a long drive and a fine iron shot to the second green, where he sank a 10ft

putt for 3. Ho sank a 15-footer at tho seventh for 3, and got a 6 at the eighth after being in a pot bunker to the left of the fairway, his recovery from which was still off the fairway, and his third short of the dip. He thou dropped a fine shot to the pin and took two putts. A sure 3 saw him in in 30, his figures being 5,3, 3,5, 3, 5,3, 6, 3. His inward journey was very sound. Ho failed with his tee shot at the short fifteenth, and was under tho bank, but played a fine pitch shot, which left a not difficult putt for 3, but the hole cost 4. His in figures were 4,5, 5,4, 4,4, 4,4, 3. Moss took 39 on the outward journey. He played a rotten chip shot at the tenth, landing in a bunker. Ho finished the round in 82.

H. A. Black failed to better 80, being 40 out and 41 back. Dr Rose also failed to make a showing. Leading A. D. S. Duncan by two strokes and Douglas by four, Shaw set out this afternoon with every intention of making sure of his claim to continue to hold the New Zealand open championship. He was lucky in being out early in the afternoon, the rain holding off till he had reached the sixteenth, when it commenced to fall heavily. He made the most of his opportunity. He

was out in 33—great golf—his figures reading 4,3, 2,5, 3,4, 4,5, 3. For a time it looked certain that ho would break 70, but the rain unsettled him. Ho slipped his putts on the last two greens, taking s’s and finishing in 71 to aggregate 289 and to he the open champion for the third successive occasion. A. D. S. Duncan kept up his steady form. With bad weather practically all the way he handed in 74, which was good enough to give him an aggregate of 294 and to make him runner-up. The third man was the professional Douglas, whoso 7G gave him an aggregate of 298. Duncan’s card was:— Out—s, 5,3, 5,3, 4,5, 5, 3. In—4, 3,5, 5,3, 4,4, 3, 5. , His four rounds constitute a great performance, despite the fact that he was playing on the home course. Moss did a fine concluding round of 70—35 each way—a magnificent performance under tjje conditions, gaining him the Jellicoe Cup for the best single round in the open. COMPLETE SCORES. The following are the complete scores in the open championship:—
