BRITAIN’S BUDGET

PRESENTATION TO-DAY EXCEPTIONAL INTEREST (British Official .Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. RUGBY, April 18. (Received April 19, at 11.30 a.m.) The Budget will bo presented in the House of Commons to-morrow by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain). This will bo Mr Chamberlain’s first Budget, for, although he was Chancellor in 1923 he held office for only a few months, and after the General Election of that year he was appointed Health Minister. To-morrow’s speech is awaited with exceptional interest, particularly as reference to the first recommendations of the Import Duties Advisory Committee is expected to be of considerable importance. Newspapers anticipate that the recommendations will not be limited to proposals in connection with goods which come under the Abnormal Importations Act, which will shortly expire, and in some quarters it is believed that a measure for the protection of certain branches of the iron and steel industry will be disclosed. In regard to the income tax, although no alteration in the rates is expected, the newspapers are confident that there will be some modification in personal allowances in relief of income tax.

It is suggested that the results achieved at the Lausanne Conference in Juno and the Ottawa Conference in July may necessitate framing a supplementary Budget in tho autumn.
