A number of important cases, consequent on the rioting, were hoard in the I’nlico Court this morning. Violet Robinson (32), a married woman, living in Romucra, was charged with throwing stones in Pitt street on Friday night, breaking a window valued at £3O, inciting to lawlessness, ami stealing a clock, gold ring, etc., of the value of £7 15s. She admitted the inciting charge only. Evidence was given by detectives that at _ the height of tho riot in Pitt street sho -threw stones, breaking a window. She was calling out the words of ‘ The Red Flag,’ am! she abused passing specials. Tho accused, in evidence, said: “ I admit tin-owing one stone.” The Magistrate (Mr Hunt): That’s enough for mo. The accused said a man in the crowd handed her jewellery. She intended to give it to the police, but was arrested meantime. Detective-sergeant Kelly said that the woman, during a minor riot over a year ago, threw bricks, and she was then given a'chance. She had ten previous convictions for theft. The magistrate sentenced her to nine months in gaol. Oswald William Henry M'Grath (34), an engineer, in employment, for breaking a window in Symonds street on Saturday night and jeering at the police when they were advising tho crowd to go homo, received two months in gaol. ITopa George Shalfoon (25), a seaman, found illegally on premises, and also charged with the theft of footwear, shirts, and jewellery on Thursday, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment ; to be followed by a year’s reformative detention. Ho was previously convicted of theft but was admitted to probation. Edward Stan’ey Hamilton (21), a bootmaker, and Gordon Henry Dale (25) a seaman, who were arrested on Saturday, were charged with, on April 12, smuggling six books entitled ‘ Revolutionary Programme,’ and fifty books entitled ‘ The Tasks of the Red Trade Unions,’ also other books. They were remanded to appear on tho 26th inst. Bail at £250 each, with sureties, was allowed. Thomas Clark Fordyce (38), a, carpenter, was charged with stealing gelignite and fuses from the Mount Eden Borough Council. He was remanded for medical observation.
