ODDFELLOWSHIP

A large and representative gathering assembled at the lodgeroom, Albany street, the occasion being the annual installation of officers of the South Otago District, No. 1. D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge occupied the chair, and was supported by a full complement of officers. Correspondence from Linden Lodge was received and dealt with, and various accounts were passed lor payment. The installation of officers was then proceeded with, the following officers officiating:—Grand Sire Bro. L. D. Ritchie (installing master), G. Secretary Bro. W. F. Crooko (D.D.G. war.), P.G.M. Bro. D. M. Miller (D.D.G. secretary), P.G.M. Bro. A. H. Valentine (D.D.G. treas.), D.D. G. Bro. A. C. Beveridge (D.D.G. mar.), P.D.D.G.M. Bro. W. Smith ■D.D.G. chap.), P.D.D.G.M. Bro. M. K. Glover (D.D.G. guar.). The following officers were installedßros. L. D. Grigg (degree master), H. Jones (D.D.M.), R. S. Kirkham (D. secretary), J, N. Milne (D. treas.), R. M'Hardy (warden), E. Wise (cond.), W. C. Campbell (chap.), D. Harborne (I. giiar.). Grand Sire Bro. Ritchie tendered his congratulations to the newly installed officers, and expressed the hope that they would have a bright future before them, each officer cooperating to further the best interests of the order. Encouraging speeches were made by the installing officers, each of whom pledged his help and support in every way. Bro. L. D. Grigg extended a welcome to P.G. Bro. Ormiston (P.D.L. rep.), who, although a member of over forty years’ standing, is still active in his lodge and order. Bro. Ormiston, in reply, voiced his appreciation of the welcome accorded him, and expressed his pleasure at witnessing such a fine ceremony. A resolution was passed authorising the lodge to place a wreath on the Cenotaph on Anzac Day in memory of the fallen. N.G. Bro. J. A. Hastio presided over a large attendance of members and visitors at the regular meeting of Pioneer Lodge on Tuesday last. The report of the Visiting Committee indicated that claims for sick allowance were fairly light. Correspondence was read from the Grand Lodge intimating an increase of membership for New Zealand, and reporting the opening of two new lodges. An invitation was accepted from the Maori Hill Lodge to attend its next meeting, when a paper would be given by P.G. Bro. F. W. Joseph. The lodge adjourned to enable the half-yearly installation of officers to be proceeded with. D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge, accompanied by a very capable team, was admitted, and proceeded to install the following officers into their respective chairs:— Bros. W. A. Pryde (N.G.), N. Edmenson (V.G.), A. F. Marychurch (cond.), F. Bohm (warden), J, R. Dunn (chap.), L. F. Smart (inner guard), E. Dunn (outer guard), J. E. Dunn (R.S.S.), Z. Dunn (L.S.S.), W. A. Bosworth and S. B. Sneddon (N.G. supp.), J. K. Wilson and J. Olson (V.G. supp.), Secretary Bro. F. H. M'Arthur, Treasurer Bro. G. Latimer (re-elected). In responding to the toast of “The Installing Officers,” D.D.G.M. Bro. Beveridge said he considered it a great honour to be associated with Pioneer Lodge, No. 1, the mother lodge of the order. He made reference to the splendid records created by the early members of Pioneer, many of whom ho was pleased to see present. He counselled the members to be diligent in their duties, over remembering that owing to the position their lodge occupied as the first lodge of the order in New Zealand their standard would serve as an inspiration to their brother lodges. All the installing officers conveyed their congratulations and voiced the opinion that the newly-installed officers would worthily uphold the traditions of Pioneer Lodge. D.D.G.M. was called upon to present a P.G.’s jewel to Bro. L. F. Smart, and in doing so referred to that brother’s very fine record while serving tho lodge as N.G. Bro. Smart suitably replied, assuring the members of his desire to continue to serve the best interests of Oddfellowsbip. Supper was served, and the following visitors responded to a vote of thanks:—V.G. Bro. A, Bingham (Leith), Bro. S. Bennett (Unity), Treas. Bro. G. Baker (Linden). At tho last meeting of Leith Lodge on April 5 a good attendance of members greeted the N.G. (Bro. E. Beecher), who occupied the chair. Sick reports were received and dealt with, and members were very appreciative of tho very comprehensive report tabled by the committee. As this was the date of the half-yearly installation of officers the N.G. declared a recess in order to arrange for that function. On the lodge resuming, Grand Sire Bro. L. D. Ritchie was admitted, accompanied by the following officers: —P.D.D.G.M. Bro. H. H. Johnson (D.D.G. war), D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge (D.D. mar.), P.D.M. Bro. R. R. Hendrj (D.D.G. chap), P.G. Bro. R. MTlardy (D.D.T. guar). The following officers of Leith Lodge were installed into their respective chairs: —Bros. E. Beecher. (N.G.), A. Bingham (V.G.), H. Jones (cond.), A. C. Beveridge (warden), R. S Kirkham (chap.), W. Stroude (I. guar.), Right and Left S.S., M. Gray and G. Tyrie. N.G. Bro. Beecher extended the thanks of tho lodge to the installing master and members of his staff, and said he appreciated the very dignified manner in which the ceremony had been conducted. Grand Sire Bro. Ritchie, in voicing his congratulations, remarked on tho lino stamp of officers which had been chosen to occupy the various chairs. He urged the members to be assiduous in their efforts to promote the welfare of the order, and at all time practise the great motto of tho order, “ Friendship, Love, and Truth.” In view of the forthcoming card tournament, Bro. H. Jones was appointed captain of the Leith team. Supper was thou served, and tho following visitors responded to the welcome:—P.G. Bro. N. Dunne (Pioneer), N.G. Bro. D. Harborne \Linden). A very large attendance of members ami visitors greeted N.G. Bro. Robinson on tho occasion of tho half-yearly

installations of Unity Lodge. A report by the Visiting Committee indicated that a fairly large number of brethren was on the sick list, consequently the disbursements for sick allowances were fairly heavy. It was noted with satisfaction that the Sick Visiting Committee of the lodge was very attentive in carrying out its duties. An appeal on behalf of a distressed member of the lodge was authorised by the Grand Lodge, and it is confidently hoped wat the response will bo generous. An invitation to visit Maori Hill Lodge was received, the occasion being a paper by P.G. Bro. Josepr, D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge was in attendance to conduct the installation of officers, and was assisted by the following district officers:—P.G.M. Bro. A. 11. Valentine (D.D.G. war.), P.D.M. Bro. R. R. Hendry (D.D.G. mar.), P.D.D.G.M. Bro. J. MTvor (D.D.G. chap.), D.M. Bro. L. D. Grigg (D.D.G. guar.). The following members of Unity Lodge were installed into their respective chairs: — Bros. A. Berrett (N.G.), J. MTntyro (V.G.), A. Holley (warden), E. Sudden (con.), G. Bowler (chap.), C. Payne (1.G.), S. Harraway and C. Hall (S.'S.). The D.D.G.i*.., in responding to a vote of thanks, congratulated the lodge on the large attendance of members, which, he said, indicated a re--1 newal of interest, and trusted that the newly-installed officers would do their utmost to retain the interests of tiie members. P.G.M. Bro. Valentino referred to the proud position which the order held to-day, and said this was largely owing to sacrifices made by the early members. He also drew attention to the fact that, despite tho prevailing conditions, the total membership of the order in New Zealand had increased. The N.G. extended a welcome to the Bros. Bennett, of AVedderburn, who expressed their pleasure at witnessing such a fine ceremony. The visitors' vote was responded to by N.G. Bro. Beecher (Leith), N.G. Bro. D. Harborne (Linden), Secretary Bro. L. D. Grigg (Maori Hill), N.G. Bro. A. Lawson (St. Kilda). On Saturday, April 9, the half-yearly installation of officers of Hercweka Lodge took place at Portobello. A large number of town members travelled by bus and received a very warm welcome from _ the Portobello brethren. After routine business had been attended to, D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge and the officers of South Otago District Lodge were admitted and accorded the usual honours of the order. For tho purposes of installation, D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge (installing master) was assisted by the following officers: —D.D.G. War. Bro. C. A. Bolton, D.D.G. Mar. Bro. R. R. Hendry, D.D.G. Chap. Bro. Ormiston, D. Guar. Bro. L. D. Grigg. The following officers of Hereweka Lodge were installed into their respective chairs:—Bros. J. M‘Kay (N. 6.). J. Edmondson (V.G.), H. Hansan (conductor), J. P. M'Cartney (chap.), W. Hansen (warden), H. Brown (I. guar.), M. Pero (R.S.S.), D. Rutherford (R.S.N.G.), W. M'Kay (L.S.N.G.), Bros. Will and Broadley (V.G. sup.). D.D.G.M. Bro. Beveridge, in responding to a vote of thanks, congratulated the members on their installation, and said it afforded him great pleasure to officiate as installing master. He referred to the very fine spirit of fraternity which they always displayed, and said lie felt sure that the high traditions of the lodge were safe in the keeping of the present officers. Tho N.G. extended a welcome to Bro. C. A. Bolton, P.D.G.M., and said tho lodge appreciated his presence after a lengthy absence. Bro. Bolton suitably replied, and assured tho members of his cooperation in tho work of tho order. Veteran Bro. Ormiston, of Maori Hill Lodge, whose membership in the order totalled over forty years, on being invited to speak, congratulated the lodge, and became reminiscent of the early struggles of Oddfellowsbip. He said he was very much impressed by the dignity and solemnity which had attended the installation ceremony. Visitors responding on behalf of various lodges were as .follow:—Bro. Marychurch (Pioneer), N.G. Bro. E. Beecher (Leith), N.G. Bro. Robinson (Unity), Bro. D. Harborne (Linden), Bro. C. Beeby (Maori Hill), Bro. A. Lawson (St. Kilda). N.G. Bro. C. Beehy presided over a largo and representative gathering at tho meeting of the Maori Hill Lodge on April 6. The report by the Visiting Committee _ stated that only one brother was sick, and tho necessary claim was attended to. Communications were read from the Grand Lodge and the District Lodge inviting members to attend the next meeting. A ballot was taken to elect a, member to the chair of V.G., this being necessary owing to tho fact that tho previously-elected member had retired from office. Three names were submitted to tho ballot box, Bro. W. Childs being elected. On a recess being called, D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge was requested to take charge of tho installation of officers, D. Bro. Beveridge (installing master), assisted by a competent team of officers, proceeded to install tho following officers into their respective chairs:—Bros. J. J. Middleton (N.G.), W. Childs (V.G.), H. Jones (warden), R. M‘lntyre (cond.), E. Wiso (chap.), D. Harborne (I. guard), R. and L. S. Z. Dunn and R, M'Hardy; secretary, Bro. L D. Gitog; treasurer, Bro. W. Smith. The N. extended the thanks of the lodge to tho D.D.G.M. and his staff and congratulated them on the fine ceremony performed. Tho I) D.G.M. responded, and said it afforded him great pleasure to see such a large attendance of members and expressed tho hope that the present conditions would continue. He referred to the fraternity which was always apparent in tho Maori Hill Lodge, remarking that true fraternity was tho foundation of a successful lodge. Bro. J. Duncan, a veteran member of tho order, conveyed his congratulations ami expressed the hope that the lodge would prosper despite the prevailing conditions. He assured the N.G. of his support and co-operation. Supper was handed round, the following visitors responding to the vote of thanks: —N.G. Bro. H. Robinson (Unity), N.G. Bro. E. Beecher (Leith).
