OBITUARY

MR JEREMIAH MAGVEAGH. M.P. LONDON, April 17. (Received April 18, at 11 a.in.) . The death is announced of Mr- Jeremiah Macveagh, M.P. for South Down, from heart failure. [Mr Jeremiah Macveagh was born in Belfast in 1870. After matriculating at the Royal University of Ireland, he took to journalism in his native city. He represented the 1 Daily News ’ during the evictions under the Plan of Campaign, his descriptive articles being reprinted and largely circulated in the English constituencies. He took an. active part in Nationalist politics in Belfast, and went to London to undertake the duties of private secretary to Sir James Whitehead, Bart. In England he also prominently identified himself with Irish politics ind wrote many leaflets and pamphlets. He was called to the Bar in 1918.]

CAPTAIN W. A. REDMOND DUBLIN, April 17. (Received April 18, at 11 a.m.) The death is announced of Captain W. A. Redmond, a member of the Dail, who collapsed at a friend’s funeral at Waterford. [Captain William Archer Redmond, late Irish Guards, was M.P. for Waterford from 1918 to 1922, and a member of the Dail Eireann since 1923. He was born in 1886, and was the only son of the late John Redmond, chairman of the Irish Parliamentary Party.] MR A. J. MORRISON After an illness that laid him, aside for about five weeks Mr Andrew J. Morrison, of Neidpath road, died this morning. He was formerly draughtsman in the Survey Office, but retired several years ago, and largely occupied himself in his leisure with art study. He exhibited at the Art Society’s galleries, and was on the committee of the Art Society until quite recently, when he resigned. Mrs Morrison died nine years ago. The family consists of a son in Wellington, a son in Christchurch, a daughter in Timaru, and a daughter in Dunedin, all married, the daughter in Dunedin being the wife of Mr G. H. G. Smith, of Mornmgton.
