NOTES ON TRAINING

BIVOUAC. Otago Alountod Rifles (Tahuna Park), April 20-20. THE R.N.V.R. No. 2 Sub-division. —Tho weekly parade of No. 2 Sub-division of_ tho Otago R.N.V.R.. was held at divisional headquarters on AVcdncsday, when the attendance was very good. Classes of instruction_ were carried out in seamanship, signalling, and knotting and splicing. A lecture on tho 4in gun and projectiles was given to the second part of tho starboard watch by the divisional instructor, Chief Petty Officer \V. Carr. All ratings of this sub-division are keenly interested in their work, and arc now settling down to tho programme drawn up for the year’s training. Sub-lieutenant J. H. Seelyo, R.N.V.R., proceeds for a course of collective training on board HALS. Diomede, stationed at AA 7 cllington. No. I Sub-division.—Tho weekly parade of No. 1 Sub-division was held at provisional headquarters on ThursApril 14, at 7.30 p.m., the syllabus consisting of navigation, by the commanding officer, Commander E. F. Watson; mine-sweeping class, the compass and helm, by Lieutenant. Samson, R.N.V.R.; gun-layers, and G.L.s recommended to gunnery and ammunition, by the instructor, Chief Petty Officer \V. Carr; special signalmen, signalling course, ■by Sub-lieutenant Lindsay, R.N.V.R. and Leading Signalman Foxton; balance of watches, by P.O. Brown, R.N.V.R. Sub-lieutenant C. Lindsay, R.N.V.R., leaves for H.AI.S. Diomede, stationed at AVellington, to undergo a week’s collective training. _ On Tuesday, April 12, tho divisional dance was held, and a very enjoyable evening was spent by tho ratings, fifty couples being present. The miniature rifle club will hold its weekly shoot on Tuesday, April 19. when, it is Imped, all ratings will attend. THE OTAGO MOUNTED RIFLES. Tho Otago Alountod Rifles Regiment will commence its annual bivouac on AVednesday, at Tahuna Park. _ Tho machine gun squadron and tho signal troop will parade at the park at 9 a.m. and pitch tho camp in readiness for the country squadrons, which will arrive in the evening. Tho general officer commanding tho New Zealand military forces (Aiajorgeneral Sinclair Burgess) will inspect the regiment on Friday, while the officer commanding tho Southern Command (Lieutenant-colonel Nicholls) will also visit the camp. It is anticipated there will be about 170 mounted men in camp, in addition to tho band of the unit, and it is hoped that the regiment will be mounted in the Anzac Day parade. THE OTAGO REGIMENT. The non-commissioned officers of A Company met last Monday evening r.t the Drill Hall in connection with the forthcoming dinner with which tho company will terminate its activities lor the training year. Company Sergeantmajor Friend presided over about a dozen non-commissioned officers, w-ho exhibited a great deal of enthusiasm for the arrangements made by the Organising Committee, on whose behalf Second-lieutenant Gladwin addressed the meeting. A president and vicepresident were elected, and arrangements were made for the proposing of the toasts and other important matters. All ranks of the company are reminded that tickets for this function should be procured at to-night’s parade or from Colonel A. S. Falconer’s shop, Princes street. Tho recruit secretary of A Company, which parades every Wednesday under Lieutenant Gladwin, was well attended last week, preparation being carried out for Saturday’s Lewis gun firing at Pelichet Bay. This class will hold its final parade for the year this AVednesday. On Saturday D (AI.G.) Company will parade at the rifle range to undergo livo ammunition practice on both the long and short ranges. ANZAC DAY PARADE. As usual, all units in tho city of Dunedin will parade on Anzac Day, April 25, to take part in the memorial service at the Queen’s Gardens. Lieutenant-colonel A. S. Falconer, D. 5.0., AI.C., will command the parade, and Alajor 0. H. Alead, D. 5.0., N.Z.S.C., will be his staff officer. Staff-sergeant-major J. Cummings, N.Z.P.S., will be parade-sergeant-major. Officers will wear full dress and other ranks will wear drill order witli medals. The various units will parade at the Oval at 1300 hours and march to Hm Queen’s Gardens via Princes and High streets in the following order;—ine Otago Mounted Rifles, 3rd Artillery Band, the 12th and 14th Batteries, Band of tho Ist Battalion, tho Otago Regiment, the Ist Battalion, the Otago Regiment, tho Otago University Company, New Zealand Alcdical Corps, the Bugle and Trumpet Band of tho Otago Regiment, the R.N.V.R., the Bugle Band of the Ist (Cadet) Battalion, tho Otago Regiment, and tho Ist and 2nd (Cadet) Battalions of tho Otago Regiment will march in rear. The official guests and wreath parties will assemble at the Lower High street entrance to the Queen’s Gardens at 1355 hours, and march into position while the Highland Pipe Band plays ‘ Flowers of tho Forest.’ The Colours of tho Otago Regiment will then inarch on and receive the general salute, after which tho flag will be broken out at the mast-head. A short prayer will follow, and the flag will bo lowered while ‘Retreat’ is blown. Three volleys will ho fired by the firing party, provided by the Otago Boys’ High School unit. Tho wreaths will then bo laid on the monument, alter which the Artillery Band will play ‘ Abide With Ale.’ ‘ Reveille ’ will bo blown and the flag raised again, then the Colours will be marched off. Tho units will thou march past rlie Colours of the Ist Battalion, the Otago Regiment, at the junction of Lower High and Rattray streets, and dismiss in Moray place.
