WELLINGTON WAR MEMORIAL

DEDICATION CEREMONY {Pb* United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, April 17. This afternoon the Wellington citizens’ war memorial was formally handed to the city at a dedication ceremony attended in perfect weather by a large gathering. The parade included detachments of the New Zealand Naval Division, the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, the Territorials, College Cadets, and returned soldiers. The Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe were present, and the dedication was performed by the Bishop of Wellington (Dr Sprott). Among the speakers were the Prime Minister (Right Hon. G. W. Forbes) and the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, who proposed that in accordance with the practice in London at the Cenotaph citizens should display homage by baring their heads as they passed the memorial. The suggestion was supported by Colonel H. E. Avery, president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and other speakers.
