BRITISH TARIFF

EFFECT ON TRADE RETURNS INCREASE IN EXPORTS (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. RUGBY, April 12. An increase in the exports and a decrease in the imports are shown in the Board of Trade returns for March, the first complete month since Britain changed her tariff policy. The figures, which wpro issued to-day, show that the month’s exports- were £36,620,.!/6, or about £1,200,000 over February, and the imports £1,119,411, or over £9,000,000 less than February. The adverse trade balance has been reduced to £24,499,000, compared with £34,738,968 in the previous month. HELP TO HOME INDUSTRIES STRIKING REDUCTION IN IMPORTS. LONDON, April 13. The newspapers emphasise the historic interest of the trade returns, following seventy years of Freetrade. They point out the striking reduction in the adverse balance of Britain’s trade in the first month of the general tariff, the excess of imports for March being .only £29,923,000, which is £10,267,000 less than for February. Moreover, the imports which have suffered reductions are manufactured articles, while the exports are the highest of the year. Therefore, some papers claim that there is evidence of tho effect of the new tariffs in many directions, and that they will soon bo helpful to home industries. The least satisfactory feature is a further decline in the coal exports as a result of the import .restrictions in France, Germany, and Belgium.^
