He is twenty-three, but he looked as though twenty years had been added to his age. ’ When he heard the fateful words not guilty he dropped back into his* chair in ' a collapse, while prolonged cheering filled the court, still crowded, although the hour was near midnight,; The girl’s family _ had objected to Donaldson’s association with her, and you no- Allen was accused of deliberately” shooting him for betraying her* Rose, the sister, had given evidence against her brother at the trial, but when Allen left the court she was tho first to throw her arms round him, and' they wept together. If Allen had not be acquitted something serious might have happened* While awaiting the jury’s decision si large crowd gathered outside the court! shouting, “We want Lucas 1” Albeit Lucas is a young man who was a) friend of Donaldson. He was present at the shooting and declared that Allen shot on purpose to kill, whiler the defence pleaded that the killing was unintentional. Lucas was hurried secretly away, from the courthouse. Rose Allen also suffered annoyance from the crowd, which hissed and booed her when th» jury retired.
