IMPORTERS AND SHIPPERS

EXECUTIVE MEETING The monthly meeting of the Executive of the Otago Importers and SbipAssociation was held on Tuesday evening, the vice-chairman (Air J. H. Somerville) presiding. Tho Secretary reported that the farewell function and presentation arranged’ by the association, with the support of other local business bodies, to Mr S. K. Sleigh on his rccent_ retirement from the Union Steam Ship Company, had proved a great success. The recent decision of the Government that the Maui Pomare should in future only discharge at AA’ellington and Lyttelton was discussed. Tho association, while regretting tho elimination of Dunedin as a port of call, felt that under present financial conditions the Government was justified in its action, especially as it was considered that the saving effected might mean that the vessel would henceforth pay her way. In these circumstances it was considered that the association should fall in lino with the local Chamber of Commerce, in supporting the Government’s action, and the secretary reported that be had seen correspondence showing that tho department controlling the vessel had much appreciated tho action of those locally interested in her running. The Secretary reported that he had recently been consulted in connection with three different claims for “ shortlanded ” and “ damaged ” cargo. One claim had been subsequently adjusted, while tho remainder were still subjects of discussion with tho agents of the vessels involved.
