SERIOUS THREAT BY UNEMPLOYED. Grievances in connection with rations day at Lower Hutt led to some trouble with the unemployed. The mayor was absent, but the deputymayor (Mr Mitchell) heard of the matter and invited the demonstrators to the Lyceum Hall, where he asked for a concise statement of the grievances, which related not only to methods of distribution, but to the prices charged and also as to quality in the case of meat. Despite the warning of Mr Mitchell as to the serious nature of the motion, the following was carried: —“ That, failing an immediate satisfactory reply by the deputy-mayor to the demands of the meeting, we wait cn masse upon the charitable aid officials. and that if wo do not get what we want we will take it.” Mr Mitchell was to be waited upon later for an answer—Wellington Press Association.
