EARLY SETTLERS

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The monthly meeting of the Otago Early Settlers' Association was held in tho association’s room, tho president (Mr J. J. Mallard) occupying the chair. The following members of the committee wore present:—Messrs E. Webster, C. Morris, G. B. M. M'Dermid, W. H. Fcrens, J. W. Patton, W. Nicolson, J, Hope, E. C. Hazlett, D. J. Caldcr, J. A. Paterson, J. H. C. Somerville, and 15. H. Steele. Apologies were received from F. W. Knight, H. Baron, James Brown, A. Ecclcs, James Wallace, and Walter Blackie. The President reported that he and a number of members of the association bad attended the Waikouaiti reunion of early settlors on March 19. They received a kind reception, and a most enjoyable day was spent. He and a number of members had also attended the Port Chalmers reunion. There was a large and enthusiastic gathering, and a happy evening was spent. The president also reported that the anniversary gatherings had been most successful. A very fine friendly spirit prevailed throughout. Mr C. Morris said that he had heard that there was a movement to have a plate placed as near as possible to tho spot where the first early settlers landed in Dunedin. He moved that the association express its appreciation of the suggestion, and hoped tjiat it would be carried to a successful'issue; and, further, that the secretary write to the Port Chalmers Association suggesting that something on the same lines be done there.—Agreed to. Tho following gifts were received and votes of thanks passed to tho donors: — From L. E. Wilson, Bond street, Dunedin, miner’s right No. 28,294, September, 1877, in the name of W. Bremncr.

The following early settlors were enrolled Peter Muir, 167 Maitland street, arrived early ’sixties; John Turnbull, 6 Vernal street, Anderson’s Bay, Three Bolls, 1858; Mrs Jessie Steel (nee M‘Hardy), West Plains, Invercargill, Strathallan, 1858. Twentyone descendants wero also enrolled.
