BACHELORS AND SPINSTERS
SUGGESTIONS OF TAX [FROM OOR PARLIAUBXTARY REPORTER.] WELLINGTON, April 13. Although no decision has yet been reached on the point, it is regarded as not unlikely that the Government will decide to introduce this year a bachelor and spinster tax ns part of its income taxation proposals. Mr Forbes has indicated that it is not proposed to deal with income taxation this session, but the feeling still exists among some members that if Cabinet agrees to postpone the main session until October it cannot escape from presenting a taxation Bill, notwithstanding that the returns will not be received by the department until June. It is stated on reliable authority that if it is decided to levy a bachelor and spinster tax, it will be by way of income tax. The scheme would provide, it is predicted, for a general lowering of the statutory exemption to enable differentiation to be made in favour of all married taxpayers. By that means bachelors and spinsters would pay an additional impost.
