Ifc is reported from Moscow that “Red” planes are bombing the icepiled western mouth of the Kuban River in order to release flood water, which has ruined thousands of acres of autumn sowings on the rich North Caucasian Steepe, causing incalculable losses. It has destroyed fifty villages, and thousands of Cossacks are homeless.
An official bulletin does not mention the number of lives lost, but it says that special flood fighting commissions have been appointed.
Disquieting reports from faminestricken districts mention that cattle are dying of starvation, and peasants in the Volga basin are grinding seed reserves. Officials declare that there has been no scarcity of food, but it has been squandered. They also declare that Siberian peasants had misused agricultural and other machinery, using the leather belting to sole their boots. —‘ Times ’ Cable.
