LUXURIOUS YACHT

NAHLIN AT RUSSELL WEALTHY VISITOR’S CRUISE A, splendid sight was witnessed at Rusted on Saturday when the 1,600ton luxury yacht Nahlin, a gleaming mass of white and gold with a blue waterline, rounded Tapeka Point at a speed of about fifteen knots, and came smartly to anchor about half a mile from the shore (says the Auckland ‘Herald’). The yacht, which has brought its owner, Lady Yule, and her daughter, Miss Gladys Yule, to New Zealand so that they may enjoy the lisliing which the dominion offers, was not expected until Sunday and its arrival at 12.35 p.m, on Saturday found very few people on the foreshore. The vessel is commanded by Captain T. A. .Rainey, R.N.R. The moment Hie vessel came to rest a boom was swung out, and a fast motor launch, callable of a speed of forty miles an hour, was lowered to the water in readiness for immediate service. The doctor went aboard and gave the- ship its clearance, and was followed by the harbour master, Customs officials, and a representative of the Government Tourist Department, which is arranging Lady Yule’s itinerary while she is in New Zealand. LADY YULE’S FISHING PLANS.

Later in the pfternoon members of the Russell Progress League were entertained aboard the Nahlin at‘afternoon tea, and in the evening Lady Yule and 'hot daughter went ashore and visited the picture theatre at Russell. On Sunday morning Lady Yule inspected tho launch Zane Grey, which she will use for deep-sea fishing while at Russe", and conferred with (Messrs F. and M. Arlidge, who will be in charge of the launch. In the afternoon she motored over the new scqnic road to the Whangaruru Ranges and to the Whangaruru Harbour. Lady Yule, who has already charmed all with whom she came in contact, expressed a deep interest in farming in New Zealand, and inquired about the market prices of butter, wool, and mutton. She expressed herself as delighted with the New Zealand scenery, she bad seen, and said she was looking forward keenly to catching some large fish at Cape Brett. She will commence fishing, this morning. The yacht made < r picture of charm and grace as it lay at its anchorage on Saturday evening, when there was an exceptionally fine sunset, which was reflected in the white enamel sides of the vessel, which shone almost, dike glass.

■ A FAIRY-LIKE SCENE. As dusk descended the lights of the vessel were switched on and shone like rows of fairy lamps. Across the water came the sound of bagpipes, and watchers on the shore saw the ship’s piper pacing the fore-deck as lie played. A large number of canaries and other singing birds, in cages suspended around the upper and lower decks, •provide a chorus of melody throughout tho hours of daylight; and can be heard from the shore. The ship is thus a constant source of interest, a prominent featme that evokes comment being the figurehead, which represents an Indian chief. The word Nahlin Itself is an American Indian word meaning “fleetfoot.” The Nahlin carries a crew of fortyeight, whe move about their tasks with a precision one expects to encounter only in tho Navy News by wireless is received from Rugby every day. There are twenty guest cabins, with ten bathrooms, and each deck has luxurious saloons, furnished with brocade and tapestfy upholstered lounges. RICH INTERIOR FURNISHINGS. The interior of the vessel is panelled in light oak, and there are elaborate mess rooms foi the officers and men. There is a well-stocked library, and beautiful blooms grow in pots and tubs throughout the ship. At the aftermast flies the pennant of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. At the steru is the Blue Ensign. Hobart was the last port of call of the Nahlin, -which is making a world cruise. Good time was made-across the Tasman Sea, Hobart being left on January 12. Although severe weather was encountered for three days, smooth seas prevailed after passing North Cape. About three week’s will be spent at Russell, after which the ship will come to Auckland to refuel. Lady Yule, who is the widow of the late Sir David Yule, a wealthy Calcutta merchant, is reputed to possess a fortune of up to £30,000,000. She and her daughter are the only passengers on the yacht. After visiting Auckland they will go to Rotorua, and will also visit Lake Taupo for the trout fishing. Their programme at present is to travel down the Wanganui River and then rejoin tlie Nahlin at Wellington. On leaving Wellington the Nahlin will go to Timaru. Lady Yule and her daughter will .visit Mount Cook and Lake To Anau, travelling over the Milford Track to join the yacht at Milford Sound. They will cruise to Doubtful and Dusky Sounds before tho Nahlin returns to Wellington to refuel preparatory to visiting the Pacific Islands on the homeward voyage.
