LIFE GIVEN FOR FRIEND

CHRISTCHURCH, January 20. A verdict that death was due to drowning in an attempt to save the life of his friend was returned at the adjourned inquest into the death of Thomas Hugh Erie Monro, which was held to-dav. Evidence was given that his brother-in-law, .1. D. Simpson, got into difficulties, and Monro went to his assistance after despatching a boy for The coroner (Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) remarked; “It may be some consolation to his relatives and friends that Monro lost his life in an endeavour to sayc the life of Simpson. Being only ii moderate swimmer, ho know lie was risking his life, yet lie did not hesitate to go to his friend’s assistance.”
