BRIGHTON RATEPAYERS
ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The first annual meeting of the Brighton Ratepayers’ Association was held last evening in :the School Hall, Brighton, Mr Robert Wales presiding. There was an attendance of over fifty members, including a number of ladies. The annual report was read by the secretary, Mr Bruce Craigie, the adoption being moved by the president, who referred l to the conferences arranged by the Taieri County Council as to parking areas. Ho pointed out that all the areas as recommended by the association had been passed. The unemployed in the district had been given the work of forming the areas. The freehold section was already drained, but some hitch with the Marine De-. partm'ent, which, it was hoped, would be settled, had occurred. If not settle.d the committee would hfive to proceed with completing the freehold only, the title to which was now in the association’s name. He also pointed out tire improvement made to the road from Fairfield via Carter’s. This now enabled Mosgiel and Taieri residents to use a much shorter route to Brighton. The road was being well used. The local farmers had also expressed their satisfaction, and were able, in all weathers, to use the road. Other parts of the district would be given attention during the ensuing year. The balance-sheet, showing a credit balance, was read. Promises towards the freehold parking area purchase being spoken of and duly acknowledged. Mr F. Millier, in seconding the motion, stated that the residents were well satisfied with the result of the eight mouths’ work of the association. Ho particularly stressed the fi»e work put m by the president, and stated that the co-operation of the committee had assisted greatly in the , work accomplished. Mr M. Marshall (Kuri Bush) asked if the Taieri County Council.had been approached as to having Market square vested in the council. Mr Wales replied in the affirmative, stating that the body in question had expressed its willingness to co-operate in obtaining the necessary vesting order when approached. \ Mr E. Aslitp, speaking to the report, mentioned that during a recent visit to Wellington he had been informed by those in authority that a clause had been prepared for the Washing-up Bill vesting the square in the council, and that as soon as unanimity was obtained the matter would be put through —when this was done the square would be public property for all time. (Applause.) Mr'Aslin also explained and advocated the formation of a town board. This would, he said, be an elective body, and would. mark a distinct advancement in the fast-growing township. He also explained the efforts of the committee in opening up the way for the residents of Ocean View to obtain the freehold of their sections. (Applause.) The motion was carried.
