NOTES OH THE RACING

[Spbciai to ran ‘Star.’] Investors were somewhat astray in summing up the held for the Trentham High-weight Handicap, the favourites nuiking poor showings. Jayson (by Hunting Song or Cynic from Blue Jay), who led throughout, was seriously challenged by Retract over the final stages, but held on to win by a neck. Banbridge, who was one of the loaders from the start, was a fair third, in front of Appledore, Act icon, Royal Limond, Elude, Pixie Gold, and Babel. • * * ♦ The Wellington Stakes was won decisively in fast time by Head Lady (by Chief Ruler from Lady Egletiue), who drew Jthe outside marble, but was in front at the false rail hnd led into the'home run from Tea .Chat, Tea Trader, and La Moderne. Tea Trader here drew out to issue a challenge inside the distance, but could make little impression on the leader, who finished full of running. Tea Chat was a moderate third in front of La Moderne, who ran out wide entering the course proper. The favourite, Golden Wings, had a bad passage when the field crowded nearing the straight entrance. * * * » Heremia (by Lapidary from Blodwin) was confidently supported for the Apprentices’ Plate, and he recorded an impressive win. He was in the middle of the field entering the straight, but gradually worked his way to the front and was going away at the finish, to beat Oratorian and Princess Argosy, with Ganpat at the head of the remainder. Heremia put up a creditable performance, as he was not well favoured over the first half of the journey. He will now be in strong demand for the Duoro Cup. Oratorian and Princess Argosy also did well, as both were at the tail of the field over the first two furlongs. The latter was set a tevero task in being in the lead with Azalea and Beacon Fire at the straight entrance. Azalea stopped badly in the run home, while Ruling Light was only prominent 1 in the first two furlongs. She was then sent back to a rear position, from which she never improved. , * * • * The Riccarton-owned Silver'Ring (by Silverado from Orange Blossom) outclassed the field in the Fitzherbert Handicap and paid a big price. He drew well out, but was in a good position close in at, the false rail. Inside the distance he shot past the leader, Arena, and went on to beat the latter in a decisive manner. Princess Bell was a good third in front of Courtyard and Hilary. The last-named, who got away well, was one of the early leaders, but was taken out wide at the false rail and then put in a sterling finishing run. The winner was having his fourth race for his owner, who only entered the ranks of owners when he purchased this youngster a few months ago. Silver Ring’s success was enhanced by the time recorded, which was*half a second faster than in the Stakes. # * * • The contest for the Wellington Cup was full of interest throughout, and culminated in a memorable finish. The early leaders were Arrow Lad, Great Star, Jaloux, Esteem, Royal Saxon, and Gay Crest, and-entering the back stretch Esteem and Arrow Lad were together clear of Jajoux, Great Star, Monaloff, Royal Saxon, Gay Crest, Nea Lap, and l Admiral Brake. There was not much change to the home turn, except that Admiral Drake and Royal Love moved up to the leaders, and this pair followed Esteem into the straight with Jaloux, Arrow Lad, and Great Star in close attendance, while Compris at this stage was making a strong run from the back. Royal Love had charge inside the distance, but was soon tackled by Jaloux, and later by Compris. In a stirring struggle Compris, by Kilbroney—Lady Helena, gained a head verdict from Jaloux, with Royal Love a neck away, then a gap of two length's to Spearful and Gay Crest together. They were followed by Spearful, Great Star, Black Duke, Admiral Drake, Esteem, Cluny, Arrow Lad, Monaloff, Nea Lap, and Royal Saxon. The winner was responsible for a herculean effort, as he only had two horses_ behind him at the far turn. The time recorded was half a second .inside ■ the Australian record held by Gothic and Kidaides, and it beat the New Zealand record by 2sec.' The first half occupied 49 l-ssec, the first mile Imin 40 l-ssec, and the last half 4S 4-ssec. ‘ \ Jaloux, who was well placed throughout, put up another solid fight. Royal Love was one of the rear division for the first half-mile, but made a fast run rounding the far turn, and was set a severe trial. In being up in second place entering the straight he appeared to.-, be the unlucky contestant. Gay Crest showed _ promise inside the distance,, but his effort was not long . sustained under his big weight* Peter Jackson was well back until the home run was entered. Black Duke was last away, but ran up to a forward position along the back. He, however, could not go on in the run home. #»»'<* Gold* Pit endeavoured to win the Anniversary Handicap from end to end and only failed in the last stride. She was followed into, the straight by Ball Dress, Chrysology (by. Psychology from Desert Gold), Minerval, Nightmare, and Desert Song, and. inside the distance appeared to have a comfortable victory in view. She, however, weakened when Chrysology drew up to her. The latter wore her down to gain a short neck verdict. Shatter came from a rear position' to work his way into third place at the post, two lengths back, with Minerval, Nightmare, apd Spear Lad close up. Don Jose did hot show any sign of his track form, and appeared to run into a lot of trouble bn more than one occasion. Both Shatter and Minerval will be much improved by this race. 1 * * * * Cadland vas supported down to a short price for the Telegraph Handicap, and his followers had to accept a small return for second dividend. The favourite was in close attendance on Royal Routine, Arisus, and Wise Choice entering on the course proper and took charge' 100yds from the post. The littlefancied Green Linnet (by Tonbridge from Lady Egletine) then came with a rush from the back and soon, placed the issue beyond doubt, recording a convincing win by over two lengths. The favourite was half a length away, in front of Gesture, with Arisus, Moa Bird, High Comedy, and Silvermiue next. The winner is a half-sister to Head Lady, and has raced fairly consistently over longer distances in the past few months. * * * « ■ The concluding event, the Ruapehu Handicap, found Dunraven (by Limond —Medley) in a galloping mood, and he scored an attractive victory.* He followed Solitaire It., Milady, and Niggerhead into the straight, but had, these collared inside the distance and went on to win by a clear length from Grecian Prince, who finished on strongly from

the ruck and heat Solitaire 11. by a wide margin. Gold Sand also came with a late run to gain fourth place, close up. The favourite, Hampden, was prominent early but faded out in the straight; and the second choice, Royal Amphora, was never in a likely position. - Dunraven had an easier win than the margin suggested. Grecian Prince executed some telling work over the last furlong, and will bo seen to better advantage in the Douro Cup. Gold Sand ran up to West Coast form, and will also be in favour in Friday’s race.
