VARIETY AT THE SPEEDWAY

No pains are being spared by the management of the Speedway Hoyle to seo that patrons are offered the" most diversified entertainment it is possible to present. Teams’ racing was introduced last week, and this week there will be two nnatch races. Jim Nesbit, who rode so well against the Australian in the teams’ event last week, will meet another dashing rider in Lionel Homer, and Peter Lydors and Allan Crigbton will take part in the other match. Both should be well contested, and some spectacular broadsiding is sure to be witnessed as the local men are improving with every appearance on the track. So far Tommy Tompkins has shown himself to be the best of the Australian broadsiders, but his confreres will be out to lower- his colours when they meet in the Flying Four match race, which will comprise three heats. Laurie Packer, Frank Elms, and Cliff Bysouth are all good riders, but have not been able to produce theii true form in the way that Tompkins has. The last-named goes into some thrilling slides on the bends, and his dash and daring have made him a great favourite with the crowd. Another of the Vulcan Cup Handicap series will be decided among the local riders, and the Short Limit Handicap will give the Dunedin men the opportunity of pitting themselves against the visiting stars. Homer, Nesbit, Young. Crigbton. and Lyders have all made marked improvement at recent meetings. and the Australians will need to bo at tlieir very best if they hope .to prevail in the handicap races. An innovation will be an attempt on the track record (for local riders) by Jim Nesbit. The programme promises to be the most thrilling of the season, and a first-class night’s entertainment is assured.
