NEW MATERNITY HOME
ERECTION COMMENCED IN ST. HILDA
The last vacant section in Queen’s drive, Musselburgh, has been purchased, and a start has been made to erect a private maternity hospital for Miss E. E. Pratt. Higgs and Morton have secured tho contract, which is to be completed in ten weeks’ time. According to tho plans and specifications, tho building will be the last word in this type of institution. Construction will bo of tho composite type, and tho building will offer a modern theatre, nursery, sterilising room, lavatory, and laundry accommodation, with special drying room, three staff bedrooms, a double and two single wards, dining room and kitchen. To Miss Pratt goes the credit for the designing of the establishment, which for compactness and completeness has been highly commended by the Department of Health (Wellington). Interior finishes include fibrous plaster walls and ceilings, figured red pine doors and oak panelling in the hall, while special attention is being given to the production of absolute sanitary conditions. The kitchen', which will be liberally fitted up with sliding doors to cupboards, bins, etc., will bo white enamelled, and wil[ bo fitted with a teirazzo sink top. Decolite floors will be laid in tbo theatre, sterilising room, and the lavatory. To further assist in tbo production of ideal santiary conditions, all tho corners in tho building will bo circular. The external measurements of tbo building are 80ft x 28ft, and the estimated cost 1 of the work, including the price of the land, is £2,500.
