The Mayor (Mr R. S. Black) is liaving a holiday at Lauder, Central Otago. The Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers,' is at present spending a holiday iu Christchurch. lie will arrive in Dunedin to-morrow, and will return to Wellington on January 14. Dr Neill D. Matson, who has been engaged in post-graduate work in Eng-' land for the past two years, has gained; the diploma of laryngology and l otology fi ' according to cabled advice received in Dunedin. Mr J. S. Hislop, manager of the Otago and Southland branch of the! Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society! for the past forty years, retired from.] the position on December 31. Mr OJ F. Parsonson, of the society’s Christ-* church office, has been appointed to succeed Mr Hislop. Feeling reference was made at a' special practice of the St. Hilda Band last night to the death of Mr Andrew, H. Nelson, who for over twenty years had been a member of the band. The conductor (Mr Jas. Dixon) expressed the feelings of members of the band by stating that, apart from being a player of great ability, the late Mr Nelson! had possessed personal characteristics that had won tor him the repeot and friendship of all. He _ had l been the chairman of the committee for many, years, and had performed valuable and! conscientious work on behalf of the band-—work which had helped im-l mensely towards the successes which’ l the band had attained. Respected by, all his fellow-bandsmen, and, in fact,! by bandsmen throughout New Zealand,! he was a man of sterling character,! and set a fine example to young bandsmen. The members of the band stood in silence as a mark of respect to his memory. The burial took place at the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon, members of the St, Hilda Band and the other bands of the city! following the cortege to the grave, i Mr Thomas Tankard, the well-known: bandsman, who died at Christchurch yesterday, aged eighty-one, had his first contest experience in 1880 at the contest at the Drill Hall, Christchurch* and later competed at the Christchurch' Exhibition contest in 1882, At the Dunedin contest in 1896 he was engaged by the Stanmore Band to play, the solo cornet, and at the Wellington' Exhibition contest the Engineers’ Band engaged him in a similar capacity.He played first at the Theatre Royal in 1875, and played l with nearly every company that performed in Christchurch between 1877 and 1888. He then went to Melbourne, where ho played at most theatres. After six years he returned to New Zealand, taking up residence in Napier. He played the solo cornet for Napier City Band, of which his brother, the late Fred.. Tankard, was conductor for sixteen months. Christchurch saw Mr Tankard again in 1895, and he was appointed, conductor of the Christchurch Cityi Band. In 1899 the Garrison Band was formed, and he was appointed deputybandmaster and solo cornet player. In' 1903 he was elected conductor of the Lyttelton Brass Band. Later he returned to the Garrison Band, and was associated with various other bands up till fifteen years ago. In February, 1915, he reached his jubilee as a cornetist. —Christchurch correspondent* The Postmaster-General (Hon. A.Hamilton) passed through from Invercargill this morning on his way to Wellington.
