He was from America and been guilty of divers solecisms. He had called a gentleman Mr Saint John because St. John was on his visiting card, and blushed when told that “ Sinjnn is my name, sir.” He had pronounced the name of the college Magdalen as spelt, and was informed that educated people called it “ Maudlin.” So when at the house of a lady who mentioned the Niagara Falls, he said that she “ got him guessing.” “ But surely you have heard of those marvellous falls that pour into Lake Erie?” she said. ‘‘Oh,” replied the*American, “now I know what you mean. But we don’t call them Niagara Falls. We speak of them as Niffles,”
