‘THE OUTSIDER’
NOTABLE BRITISH PICTURE FOR REGENT Now that British films command such popularity in the entertainment world it is only natural that many or the screen’s most popular stars to-day are British. Consider her feminine stars, for an instance, and such names as Madeline Carroll, Margot Grahame, Adrienne Allen, and Australia’s own Betty Stock field, of ‘ City of Song fame', immediately flash to memory, and we recall with pleasure the screen performances of these beautiful, talented artists. . With the presentation of The Outsider,’ a new star is horn—a new beautiful star, destined to shine brightly in the realm of entertainment. Joan Barry is her name, and she brings a hew charm, a new personality, combined with a perfectly English voice, to the screen. Miss Barry was only chosen for the role of 1 Lalage Sturdee” in ‘The Outsider,’ after exhaustive camera and vocal tests, for British directors seem to have the idea that Joan’s beauty could not be photographed. That she had a delightful voice they could not doubt, for it was she who “doubled” for Anny Ondra in ‘Blackmail,’ and Miss Ondra’s voice was universally admired. Discerning critics have long suspected that in Miss Barry England had one of the great actresses of our day. One critic, writing of her, said: “ She has the ethereal beauty of Lillian Gish and the emotionalibility of a Ruth Chatterton. These admirers < have their opinion fully confirmed in her wonderful performance in ‘The Outsider.’ This is said without distraction from the raelly magnificent performance of Harold Huth, who partners her in the film, and gives one of the finest exhibitions of sustained, emotional acting that has come from any male player on the screen. The scenes in which the pair appear together—and they occupy at least two-thirds of the film—reach a height of inspiration that has never been surpassed. ‘The Outsider ’ will be shown at the Regent to-morrow.
