The first order under the Horticultural Products Emergency Customs Act, which will have effect from January 5, imposes duties on various fresh soft fruits when British fruits are available. These duties include 2s 6d a lb for early and 6d for late strawberries, 3d for cherries, id for gooseberries, and 14s a cwt for plums. The duties also apply to fresh vegetables —salads, cucumbers, pens, now potatoes, asparagus (4d to Is per lb), mushrooms (8d per lb), and cut flowers (including mimosa, 2d per lb) practically throughout the year. The more expensive varieties of cut flowers carry a duty of 9d per lb, and rose trees 80s per 100,

TOMATOES AND FLOWER BULBS EXCEPTED RUGBY, December 30. (Received December 31, at 11 a.m.) Under tbo first order imposing duties under the Horticultural Products Emergency Customs Duties Act every item in the schedule to .tbo Act is covered with the exception of tomatoes and flower bulbs. It is understood that tomatoes wero omitted owing to tbo suggestion that tbo impost would involve hardship to the poorer people. Tho omission of bulbs is stated to be duo to tbo inability at the present juncture of British industry to supply' the demand.
