BROADSIDING AT SPEEDWAY ROYLE

Tiie Speedway Hoyle, under the new management, has already earned tor itself an enviable reputation for the quality of the programmes that are being presented, and also because of tho fact that tho admission charges are the lowest ruling in Now Zealand. Yet the faro that is provided is of the best, and next Saturday’s meeting should eclipse even tho two splendid gatherings that have preceded it. The big event of tho night will be tho international match race in which the two Australian stars, Cliff Bysouth and Frank Elms, will do battle witlp Sid Jackson, the famous English test rider. Jackson is classed as a more spectacular rider than the Englishmen who appeared hero last season, and his successes on tracks at Home have stamped him as one of the finest broadsiders his country has yet produced. Bysouth gave a taste of his real quality at the local speedway last week, and went into some lino slides. Elms, too, had less trouble with his motor than on the opening night and was also enabled to give some fine displays. The meeting of these men should be productive of one of the best series of races yet witnessed here, and it is interesting to re-, call that no Australian rider has yet been successful in winning a match against an English star, so that Bysouth and Elms may be depended on to overcome that “ hoodoo ” if at all possible. Tho local riders have been improving with every appearance, and some of them are developing into most spectacular broadsiders. Thus the interprovincial match race between Otago and Canterbury should be full of interest. Tho selectors have now chosen Lionel Homer- and Jim Nesbit to do battle for Otago, and the Canterbury pair will be “ Shorty ” Wicks and Jack Oakley, both good riders. Homer is one of the most improved riders here and a daring broadsider, while Nesbit is also a very sound performer. In addition to tho series of match races, tho star riders will appear in handicap events which should produce great racing. The programme is the most varied and comprehensive that has been presented by the speedway this season, 1 and tho public should witness a great night’s sport.
