' CHRISTMAS PAIRS CONCLUDED WIN FOR CAVERSHAM The Christmas pairs tournament of the Dunedin Bowling Centre was brought to a conclusion at tho Otago Green yesterday afternoon, some good play being witnessed in tho semi-finals and final rounds of the engagement be-tween-tho green winners. The winners were H. Mackay and J. Forster (Caversham), who beat J. Mooney and J. J. Read (Anderson’s Bay) in the final. The results were as follow : : SEMI-FINAL ROUND. J. Mooney and J. J. Read (Anderson’s Bay) 14, J. C. Rigby and W. Hogg (Dunedin) 12. H. Mackay and J. Forster (Caversham) 19, j. R. Wilson and J. A. Armit (Kaikorai) 14. At the first head Rigby lay nicely for Dunedin, and Hogg added a fine bowl, making the head 3 in Dunedin’s favour. Anderson’s Bay, in an open head, scored 1 in the second, and Dunedin went to sin the third. At the seventh head Bay had equalised matters, the score being 6 all. In the succeeding two heads Dunedin scored a couple of braces, making them 10, and at tho eleventh head they secured a single, the score at this stage being 11-7 in Dunedin’s favour. Hogg, lying a nice 2 in the twelfth head, promoted one of the opposition bowls to shot, making the score 11-8 against Bay. A very long head in the thirteenth saw Read play two beautiful bowls, the outcome being a fine 3, making the tallies equal. On the fourteenth head a toucher by both sides saw Hogg deprive Read of the shot and He 1, making the score 12-11. On the fifteenth head Read equalised by scoring 1, bringing the scores level with one head to go. Mooney lay on tho jack for the Bay, and Head, with bis last drew another, though Hogg made a brilliant attempt to save the situation, the game resulting in Bay’s favour, 14-12. In tho game between Forster and Armit Forster scored an easy 4 on the first head, which was fairly wide, and a single on the second. Armit played a nice bowl in the third head, taking out his opponent's shot and lying 3. 'Die next head went to Caversham, and on the fifth Forster, with a fine run, annexed a further 4, the score-reading 10-3 in his favour. Kaikorai lay comfortably with a splendid 3 on tho sixth head, but Forster trailed a bare jack to the ditch for a single, which proved unbeatable. On the seventh head Kaikorai, through Wilson’s leading, scored a good single. Caversham made a single o.i tho next head, the score then being 13-5. ./Armit played three nice bowls on the ninth head, all of which counted, bringing his score to 8. On tho tenth head Armit added another one, but Forster trailed the jack back for 3 on the eleventh head, making his score 16, and a further one on the twelfth head made the score 17-9. On the thirteenth head Armit claned it up a bit with 3 in his favour. With three heads to go Armit had a possible chance of winning, and with a safe 2 on the fourteenth head the game looked pretty open. On the fifteenth head, however, Caversham scored 2 just as the bell rang, making the game in their favour 19-14. FINAL. Mackay and Forster 20, Mooney and Read 16. The final game between Anderson’s Bay and Caversham saw a full game of 21 heads, no time limit being attached to the contest. Head one saw Mooney place one on the jack, which was undisturbed, Forster _ drawing a good second with his third ball. In the second' head Mackay lay two nice bowls, but Read’s running shot deprived him of position, and though Forster drew well Read’s last gained shot, making the score 2-0. The third and fourth heads saw the Bay annex a single .in each, followed by 2 in the fifth, Read’s raking being particularly effective, though ho had some luck with the shots. Another single on tho sixth head went to Read, and the score read 7-0. On the seventh head Forster lay a comfortable 3, but Road’s running shot with liis last bowl reduced the advantage to 1. Score, 7-1, in favour of the Bay. A similar head on the eighth saw Forster score 3, and on the ninth he drew with his last bowl, making tbe score at this bead 7-3 against him. Both Forster and Mackay outdrew the Bay pair on the tenth head, but Read ran his ball through, Forster scoring 2. On the eleventh head Mackay laid a comfortable 2 for Caversham, and Forster’s first added another. Read was short, and raked at the head with his other bowls, his last bow] changing the position a good deal, and on the count Caversham secured 6, making the score 11-7 in their favour. At the twelfth head, Read drew a nice shot at the finish, making him 8, but Caversham retaliated by gaining 2 on tlve thirteenth head. Caversham 13, Anderson’s Bay 8. On the fourteenth head Bay lay 2, but Forster’s last bowl wicked in and only 1 resulted. On tho fifteenth head Caversham played particularly well, and though Read tried to save he failed to do so, 4 resulting. Caversham 17, 'Anderson’s Bay 9. On tho sixteenth Mooney played a particularly ‘good_ head, but Forster was not to bo denied, and in tho end lay a comfortable 2. Mooney again played well on the seventeenth, and only I resulted, making Anderson’s Bay 10. Both leads played beautiful bowls on tho eighteenth head, altering the position time and again. When the skips went back Bay lay 2, and Read, blocking the head, Forster was unable to score, Caversham 19, Anderson’s Bay 12. The nineteenth head was closely contested, and was in doubt nnti l Forster’s last bowl, when ho cleaned np tho head a bit and gained 1, making tho score.: Caversham 20, Anderson’s Bay 12. On the twentieth head Mooney played three nice bowls, but Mackay lay in a handy position. Read, however, deprived him of this advantage, only in turn to see Forster draw for fourth place. Neither of the skips altered the head, 3 going to tho Bay pair and making tho score 20-15. On the last head Read lay a very nice 2. but as it required 5 to tie he elected to drive at the bead, the result being that he lay 1. Forster threw away his last bowl, the final score being: Caversham 20, Anderson’s Bay 16. Tho win was very popular, and both Forster and Rend were congratulated on the high standard of bowling displayed.

The tournament was controlled by an active executive, with Mr James Allan as president. The greenkeeper (Mr Thomson) was complimented on the fine state of the green. A ladies’ committee of the Otago Club provided morning and afternoon tea, for which they were recorded the warm thanks of players and visitors.
