Canterbury this morning batted quietly but steadily in replying to Otago’s first innings total of 161 in the Plunket Shield match, and at 12.30 had reached the century after ninety-nine minutes’ play. Hamilton’s wicket fell for 16 after he had batted for an hour and a-quar-ter. He made 16. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 180 for two wickets. Details OTAGO. First innings 161 CANTERBURY. The Wellington-Auckland match was resumed in perfect weather, Dempster and Hepburn continuing Wellington’s innings to the bowling of Matheson and Oleverley. Buns came steadily from well-placed shots off both bowlers. After half an hour, with the score at 42, Lyon relieved Cleverley, whose seven overs had cost 22 runs. Dempster pulled Matheson to the square leg boundary to reach 20, but Hepburn credited Lyon with two maidens, following Dempster into the 20’s with 4 off Matheson. Dempster banged Lyon past point to the fence. Several appeals for leg before were made, but not upheld. With the total at 60 M'Coy replaced Matheson. Dempster collected two singles and a brace off the new bowler. Dempster was now scoring more freely, and reached 40 and sent 70 up, driving Lyon for 4 and 3, but immediately afterwards fell to a smart catch by Matheson at mid-off from a full toss by M'Coy. Dempster had batted soundly, hitting four 4’s. M'Coy’s two wickets had cost 5 runs. 72—2—40. M'Girr followed and Cleverley relieved Lyon, who had sent down four overs for two maidens and 12 runs. South Auckland commenced a match against Manawatu for the Hawke Cup in Hamilton yesterday, in cold and threatening weather. Play for the most part was dull and uninteresting. Manawatu, batting first, were all out for 147, : and at tlie drawing of stumps the home side had lost two wickets for 75, The match was continued to-day. The home side has scored 207 for the loss of eight wickets.
