ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

A SUDDEN DEATH. MARRIED MAN’S COLLAPSE. An inquest was opened at the hospi-* tal this morning touching the death of Albert Edward Hanley, a married man,, aged 34 years, who resided at 619 Castle street, and who was found dead in bed at his home at 2 a.m. yesterday. Mr, H. W. Bundle, S.M., sat as coroner,, Sergeant Boulton conducting proceedings for the police. Evidence of identification was given by the wife of the deceased. She stated that her husband was working all day on December 24 up till 10 p.m, when’ he, his wife, and two children left for, home, catching a car from the Exchange at 10.20. Hanley sat smoking on the outside of the car, his wife and the children going inside. When' the car reached St. David street stop, witness noticed that deceased had fallen from the seat of the car on to the floor, of the car. She called the conductor,, who stopped the car, and went to the deceased. The latter seemed to recover,, and stood up on the road. He seemed to be dazed and the conductor was telling him his stop when a motor car, came along and the driver, saying that he knew the deceased, said he would take him home. The tram went on' and witness proceeded to her home, but returned to the footpath to look for her, husband. She stopped the returning tram, the conductor of which said he did not know the driver of the motor, car. Witness went back home and about forty minutes later, four young' men, who had been travelling in a second motor car, brought the deceased in. : His face was covered with blood front facial abrasions, and the young men' said they had picked the deceased up on the road, and had had some oulty in finding where he lived. The young men gave all assistance possible,, and the deceased was put to bed. He was subject to turns, and the young men told her that they thought that,, as his condition was caused by abrasions, there was no need to call a' doctor. Witness visited the deceased during the night, but from the time he took the turn until he was found dead at 2 a.m., he did not speak. A doctor, was then sent for, but nothing could be done.

At this stage, the inquest was ad-< punned to a time and place to be fixed later, and in the meantime the police would like to get in touch with the young men who brought the deceased home.
