WAR “CROCKS”
EX-OFFICER'S OFFER HAMPER FOR CHRISTMAS Prs« Association—Br Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, December 25. (Received December 26, at 11 a.m.) An ex-officcr announced that he was preparing a Christmas hamper to the first “ war crock.’’ He invited applications from men wounded earlier than August 27, 1914, and received .150 letters from Mons veterans, many of whom are still disabled. The hamper goes to Stoker J. Dale, of Gillingham, who was wounded aboard the H.M.S. Lark when she attempted to rescue the survivors of H.M.S. Amphion, which struck a mine. Many of the letters were most pathetic, and described the heroes’ earliest war days, and went on to state that they were now fighting unemployment and poverty. One concluded: “ The larder is empty and the grate ditto, but the spirit lives.’’
