CHRISTMAS AIR MAIL
INNOVATION IN POSTAL SERVICE An innovation in the Christmas mail service this year was the arrival at Dunedin on Christmas Eye, of an air mail from "the north. ‘ This mail coni* prised nine bags of letters, and reached the Taieri aerodrome at 2.25 p.m. The aeroplane came from Palmerston North, and the mail contained letters from Auckland, Gisborne, Hastings, Palmerston North, Blenheim, Christchurch, Timaru, and Oamaru. The aeroplane left Palmerston North almost immediately after the arrival of the Limited express from Auckland, and the pilot completed the air journey to Taieri in 7h lOmin, the time including five stops. This means that letters posted at Auckland at 5 p.m. on Wednesday wore delivered in Dunedin twenty-two hours later. The Gisborne letters were carried by to Palmerston North, the plane leaving the Poverty Bay capital at 4 a.m. on Thursday, the letters being delivered in Dunedin ten and a-half hours later.
