Mrs Gerald Fitzgerald and family are spending the holidays at Karitane. Mr and Mrs Ambrose Hudson left on Christmas Day for Lake Wanaka, where the holidays will be spent. Dr and Mrs W. Evans are spending the Christmas vacation at Wanaka. Mr and Mrs A. C. Stephens and family are holiday-making at Waihola. Mr and Mrs T. M'Crorie loft on Thursday for Hampden to spend a few holiday. Miss Irene Cherry left on Thursday to visit her sister in Wellington. Mrs Howard Jackson and the Misses Jackson are spending a fortnight’s holiday at Timaru. Mrs A. J. Chrystall left to-day for Timaru, where a holiday will bo spent. The Misses Ilosiow, Invercargill, who spent Christmas as tho guests of their aunt, Mrs C, Leighton, have now left for Mount Cook. Miss Joan Cardno is spending Christmas at Timaru. Misses Kath. Keen and Elaino Brock left on Saturday for Wellington, where they will bo the guests of Mrs J. Morrison.

Mr and Mrs James Bcgg and family are spending the vacation at their conntry cottage at Bendigo. Mr and Mrs P. W. Stabb and Miss Dessa Stabb, aro making a tour by car of tho Southern Lakes. Mr and Mrs J. Sutherland Ross and family aro spending tho vacation at Pukepito. Mr and Mrs O.J. L. White are spending tho Christmas vacation in Auckland. Mr and Mrs H. J. Dixon ami family are spending the vacation at Karitane. Dr and Mrs F. Fitchett are spending Christmas at their' country cottage at Waitati. Mr and Mrs R. H. Stevenson and family are spending the vacation at Brighton. The engagement is announced of Frances Roberta, only daughter of Miami Mrs J. T. Wright, of Duned , to John Clifton, only son of Mr and Mrs S. Clarke, Dunedin. Mrs E. C. N. Foord has returned to Dunedin after an extended holiday in Siam. Mr and Mrs D. M. Groig, Rpslyn, are spending the Christmas holidays at Waikiwi, Invercargill. Mr and Mrs Norton Oram ami Miss Oram are spending Christmas in Queenstown. Miss Olive Barth, Wellington, is the guest of her sisters, tho Misses Barth, Musselburgh. Mr and Mrs Leslie Ritchie, of Raetiki, and Dr and Mrs R. B. Ritchie, and their small daughter of Taumanmui, are the guests of Mrs P. Leith Ritchie, Roslyn. The death has occurred in Sydney, according to a cablegram received by Mr Maurice Ralph, of Mrs E. J. Gravcstock, wife of the well-known entrepreneur, who has been associated with the tours of many groat artists. Mr Gravestock and his two daughters, who live in' Sydney, have a very wide circle of friends in and out of musical and theatrical circles, both in New Zealand and in Australia.

On Saturday, December 19, a very delightful entertainment was given to parents and friends by the Misses Phyllis and Kitty Eckhoff and their pupils, when several items were given as a break-up to their dancing classes. The following pupils contributed items:— Misses Mabel Caple, Mamie Amalfitano. Phyllis Johnston, Lorctto Kay, Muriel Brown, Venus Flood, Mavis Rowe, and Audrey M'Arley. During tho programme prizes were presented by Miss Sutton to tho children for their work during the year, and later tho children had tea, followed by games and dancing.

On Tuesday evening a jolly informal party was held in Mr It. N. Field’s studio-gallery in Moray place, where an interesting exhibition and lending library of paintings has been opened. Dancing, games, and music made a happy programme. Among those present were Mesdames Field and Edgar, Misses H. Schofield, D. Porter, E. Porter, D. Eberhardt, J. Scoon, T. Northey, D. M'Cusker, Messrs R. N. Field, R, H. Fraser, J. M'Farlane, J. D. Edgar, A. Stewart, 11. Oates, R. Kennedy, C. Muir, A. Black.

The directors of Oswald M. Smith and Co. Ltd., entertained the staff and friends on Saturday last, at a jolly dance party in the Strand Salon. This was the seventh annual dance given by the directors, and one and all voted it tho best yet. Much merriment was caused by the arrival of Father Christmas with gifts, balloons, paper hats, and streamers, while tho excellent music supplied by Gordon’s orchestra, coupled with lucky spot dances, flashlight photo, and splendid supper, added to tho gaiety and enjoyment of t'Se evening. A musical item rendered by Mr S. Taylor was enjoyed by all. Mr 6. A. Donnelly, on behalf of the staff, thanked the directors for their kindly action in treating them to such splendid functions each year, Mr Oswald M. Smith replied. Mr S. Angel, manager of Commercial Bank, Hobart (late of Dunedin), cabled stating how sorry ho was to have missed tho function, the first time for years, and conveying tho season’s greetings.
