THAT FURNITURE.

TO TUB EDITOR. Sir, —Mr Black still persists in commenting on the furniture episode when addressing the electors, and as 1 am in a position to state the real facts of the case, I think it is my duty to do so. Mr Black still says that the councillors knew six weeks before the opening of the now Town Hall that the furniture had been supplied for the mayor’s room, because it had been used to furnish the stage for Sir Charles Ferguson’s farewell function. Now I say that this could not possibly bo correct, because it was I who had charge of the stage furnishings on that occasion, and the furniture used came from the shop of Thomas Wight and went back there at the conclusion of the function. How Mr Black can say that this furniture came from the mayor’s room and was sent back there I cannot understand. It appears to me to bo just a desperate effort to explain away something which cannot be explained away. — I am, etc., W. Whittv.' April 29. [The above letter was referred to ,Mr Black, who stated that it is partially correct. The present furniture, now in the reception rooms, after being ordered was kept in Mr Wight’s place to avoid, dust during building operations. It was used at the reception, and was supplemented by stock from Mr Wight. The stock (chairs, etc.) was returned to Mr Wight’s place, and the carpets, settees, and easy chairs wore placed in the reception rooms, where they still remain.—Ed. E.S.]
