Mr J. R. Kirk, M.B.E. (Gisborne)', chairman of the Dominion Council of the Boy Scouts’ Association, _ who has been travelling in Great Britain and Europe during the last fourteen months, has returned to the dominion, and arrived in Dunedin yesterday.
Mr E. J. Anderson left this morning for Timaru, where ho will appear at the Criminal Sittings. Mr James A. Shand, dominion secretary of the United_ Political Party, is at present in Dunedin. Mr Shand, who is an. old Dunedin boy, is visiting his relatives in the city and adjoining districts, and will leave for the north by next Wednesday night’s express. Mr Keith Kenelm Kirk, who has been studying in England, has been called to the English Bar from Gray’s Inn. Mr Kirk was born in Naseby (Otago) and educated at the Gisborne and Waitaki Boys’ High Schools. Mr Will Lawson will return here from Invercargill to-morrow to commence a lecturing campaign. Mr E. J. Macasscy was a passenger for the south by the express this morning. Mr H. W. Brodie, chief passenger traffic manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway, eastern division, left Dunedin for Queenstown by the south express this morning. Mr J. Robinson left by this morning’s express for Wellington. Sir Edwin Mitchelson, M.L.C., underwent an operation in a private hospital yesterday. His condition last night was reported to be satisfactory. Mrs Nora Ross has been appointed associate in the Children’s Court in Dunedin in succession to the late Mrs George Roberts. The Minister of Lands notifies the promotion of Mr W. Robertson, Assistant Under-Secretary, to be Under-Secre-tary of Lands, on the retirement of Mr J. B. Thompson.—Wellington Press Association telegram. _
By the death of Henry Francis Stevens, aged seventy-three, founder and managing director of the well-known firm of wholesale druggists, Christchurch loses a man who was known for his kindly disposition and charitable actions. Ha was born in 1858 at Bristol, England, where he studied for the medical profession in England, being associated with his brother. Dr Stevens; but later he came to New Zealand, arriving at Napier in 1879. He was employed by Sainsbury, Ellison, and Co., of Dunedin, wholesale druggists, being transferred three years later to assume the management of the company’s _ Christchurch branch. He resigned in 1887| to establish a business of his own. The newly-established firm of H. F. Stevens and Co., from very small beginnings, developed into an organisation with valuable business connections throughout the dominion. He is survived by nine sons, seven of _whom are actively engaged ’in the business; and one daughter, Mrs E. K. Ruddle, of Christchurch.
