THE ‘SPORTS SPECIAL’
FIRST ISSUE SATURDAY NEXT A HEW RUGBY FEATURE Competition in all winter sports codes commences on Saturday next, May 2, and the ‘ Evening Star’s ’ popular * Sports Special ’ will commence with them. The record of this weekly sporting newspaper has been one of psrformance rather than pretension, and the success of its appeal to the sporting public can be epitomised in the bare recital of the fact that in the course of only a few seasons it has doubled its local circulation, and won many quite unsolicited tributes from other New Zealand centres and from as far afield as Sydney. There will be no relaxation this year of the effort that has so won favour. On the contrary, new features have been obtained, and the special attention of Rugby players is drawn to the series of articles from the pen of a 1928 All Black, which will furnish a complete exposition of the tactics and craft of the player in every position of the fifteen-a-side game. These articles will give the theory of every move and feint, and will provide (with diagrammatic aid) explicit direction as to their achievement. The first article, 6 Equipment and Natural Ability,’ will be published next Saturday. The second plunges into the middle of things, with the caption ‘ Swerving, Sidestepping, Cutting, Fending, and passing.’ Every endeavour will be made, as in the past, to have the ‘ Sports Special ’ on sale in the streets at 7 p.m.
