“ Pope Joan ” was a supposed'female pope, in the ninth century, and the subject of - several mediaeval legends.: She is said to have been born in England, educated at Cologne, and was known at “ Joannes Anglicus.” A book was written in 1640 to prove that she never existed, but a large number of writers between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries eccept the story as an historical fact.
