NORTH-EAST VALLEY W.C.T.U.
There was a good attendance at the April meeting ot the North-east Valiev W'.C.T.U., which was held in the Institute. Mrs Peart (president) was in the chair. An invitation was received from Sister Lizbeth to visit the next mothers’ meeting, to, be held in the Presbyterian Church Hall, and this was accepted. Reference was made to the death of Mrs Rhodes, ,who was the first secretary of the Valley Union, and a motion of sj’mpathy with Mr Rhodes was passed by all standing. This being the “ Anzac ” meeting, feeling reference was made and sympathy expressed for those who had lost loved ones in the Great War, and for those who were stil suffering, mentally or physically, from the effects of the war; and it was decided to send a wreath (as in former years) to be placed on the school memorial gate. Miss Gray (delegate to conference) favo a very clear and full report of the usiness and the social doings of conference. which was held in Nelson last month.' She read the following resolution, which was unanimously carried by the union:—“That this union desires to draw the* attention of legislators and the public generally to the fact that over £6,000,000 is diverted from other channels every year in New Zealand by reason of the traffic in alcoholic liquors, and this union urges that any consideration of the revenue from a total of 8* millions spent in this way must take into consideration the fact that a large proportion of the expenditure upon hospitals (mental and o-eneral), gaols, and the administration of justice is directly duo to the result of alcoholic indulgence. The statement of the celebrated British economist, Sir Geo. Parish, that the abolition of the drink trade would enable the trade of the world to be restored is a significant comment on the enormous waste occasioned by this traffic.” Mrs Green, who has just returned from a visit to the Homeland after an absence of twenty-one years gave a delightful account of her travels m Britain and the Continent. A very hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Green' for her very interesting account of her trip, and to Miss Gray for her fine report of the convention was then given, and the meeting closed with the Benediction.
