The steamship Seringa, which sailed from Leith (Scotland) for the far-distant.'island of Tristan da Cunha, in the South Atlantic Ocean, carried a varied consignment of goods for the little colony. King George sent navy canvas for boat building. Queen' Mary sent thirty largo kettles and saucepans, enough for each family. Among the food supplies wero two tons of flour, with baking powder, one ton of rice, 16cwt of sugar, jam, and salt for curing. The sundries included soap, paint, tar, repo and twine, paraffin, vegetable seeds, spades, nails and screws, and 235 square yards of flooring It is more than a year since the island was last visited by a ship. Each year new boats arc built for the university boat race. They cannot be completed until the crews arc chosen, for the reason that the seats have to be adapted to the height and weight of members of the crews.
