Mr D. M'Dougall, M.P., and the Hon. D. T. Fleming were passengers for Wellington by this morning’s express. The Bt. Rev. Dr Whyte. Bishop of Dunedin, left for Wellington by the express this morning and the Rt. Rev. Dr Liston, Bishop of Auckland, who was accompanied by the Rev. Mous. Ormond, commenced the return journey to Auckland. Mr W. M. Luke, of the Canadian National Steamships, arrived yesterday from Wellington on a business visit. Mr W. H. Mackenzie, tramways manager, has returned from Auckland. The Reform executive of the Hauraki electorate selected, without a balkrt, Mr W. W. Massey as the Reform candidate at tho by-election. Fifteen names were before tho executive. A resolution was also carried opposing the fusion of the Reform and Lnited Parties.

Mr John Joseph Heasman, one of the best known of Christchurch’s old identities, died yesterday, aged eightyseven. He was best known as sidesman, bellringer, verger, and assistant verger in Christchurch Anglican Cathedral practically since it was built. Mr Heasman was horn in London and came to New Zealand fifty-seven years ago. He settled in Christchurch and Was employed in the Railway Department as foreman of stores at Addington Workshops for over twenty years. From that post he went to take up duties in the cathedral, and the remain der of his life was spent in service there. Ho was sidesman from the opening of tho Cathedral, was later bellringer, and was verger for thirty years. He retired from that post, and was on a holiday to England when the Great War commenced. Ho returned to New Zealand,and since that time had been, assistant verger right np to the date of his last illness. During his service, ho witnessed the_ consecration of Bishops Harper, Julius, and West-Watson. and was one of the first bellringers.—Christchurch correspondent.

Air W. E. 31‘Lean, who was returned unopposed for the Mosgiel mayoralty, was born at Green Island and educated at the local school, and later at the Otago Boys’ High School. After school days ho spent twelve years in an accountant’s office, and then took up local body work, serving fifteen years with the Taieri Drainage Board. He also spent some years as town clerk of Mosgiel, and occupied a seat on the borough council for seven years. For the last term of two years he has been mayor. In his business life he lias taken a prominent part in the dairying industry and for the past eight years has been general manager of the largest co-operative dairy company in Otago. Mr Al'Lean was a great enthusiast in volunteering and later in the Territorials (Otago Infantry Regiment). After twenty-five years as an officer he retired with the rank of Lieutenantcolonel. Ho was awardd the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration for twenty years’ service as an officer. Ho took a keen interest in rifle shooting,and was for several years secretary to the_ Otago Rifle Association. He is the senior justice of the peace of Alosgiel and an officer of the P.A.F.S.A.(friendly society), and a past master of the Mosgiel Masonic Lodge. He has served on the local School Committee and other local committees, besides taking an active interest in anything that helped to the advancement of the district.
