AMATEUR ATHLETICS
INVITATION TO AMERICANS Invitations are to be sent by "the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to two outstanding American athletes to tour New Zealand during the coming athletic season. They are George Simpson, of Ohio, and George Bullwinklo, from the College of the City of New York. The council also had a third name for consideration, Harlow Rothera (field events), of California, and decided, while favouring his inclusion in the invitation, to submit the matter to tho local centres. Particulars of vbo three athletes arc as follows;
Simpson (age twenty years),— 100yds, 9 4-10 sec, 9 5-10 sec (block start); 220yds, 20 6-10 sec, 20 4-ssec. Bullwinklo (age twenty years).— One mile, 4min 18 8-lOsec; half-mile, Imm 54 7-10 sec. Bullwinklo has beaten Lermond, who toured Now Zealand last season, over three-quarters of a mile in 3mm 5 3-10 sec.
Rothert.—Shot, 51ft ]in; javelin, 178 ft 6in; discus, 143 ft; .high jump, sft 10|in.
In presenting the sub-committcp’s report to tho council yesterday, Mr V. Hugo said that there were no athletes suitable in Canada, and in view of the fact that an American beam was to tour South Africa next season it was impossible to expect visitors from South Africa. ‘ It is proposed that the Americans will be in New Zealand from January 12 to March 24.
