A country labourer was endeavouring to explain to several companions the meaning of the word “ phenomenon. “It’s like Ibis, mates.” ho began. “ Now you see that held o’ thistles P Well, that’s no phenomenon. “No.” “But suppose you were to see a lark singing above it, that wouldn’t be a phenomenon either. “No.” “Well, even if there was a bull in the field at the same time, that wouldn’t be a phenomenon, you see, mates.” “ Er—yes,” same the chorus even more doubting limn _ before. “But if you saw that bull sittin’ on a thistle singing’ like a lark ,-v.well, mates, that wpuls foe $ phenomenon.
