LIQUOR IN CANADA

STATE CONTROL SYSTEM FAVOURED 1H NOVA SCOTIA ' Pf£M Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. HALIFAX, October 31. By » majority of more than 28,000 ths people of Nova Scotia, in a plebiscite on Thursday, voted against the Temperance Act at present in force and in favour of the Government control of liquor. ________ POPULARITY OF SCHEME. TREMENDOUS PROFIT'S. OTTAWA, November 1. Nova Scotia joined the majority, of the other provinces in Canada by deciding at a referendum to inaugurate the system of selling liquor in Government stores. Hitherto this maiitime province has had localised prohibition and has tried a variety of schemes, xhich have proved unsatisfactory. More than nine-tenths of Canada is served under Government control, the province of Quebec going farthest by allowing beer and wine to bo served in licensed restaurants. British Columbia has Government beer parlours, and all Canada is reaping tremendous profits from liquor sales, especially to American tourists, millions of whom flock over th® border.

To-day’s referendum and yesterday’s provincial election in Ontario indicate Jh« popularity of this system.
