JOHN M‘GLASHAN COLLEGE
ANNUAL CONCERT The annual concert of the John M'Glashan v College boys drew a crowded audience to the Maori. Hill Coronation Hall last evening. A most suitable programme of items was drawn up and offered a varied and pleasing entertainment. The boys’ choir commenced the evening by singing three pieces in unison. All were well presented, but Mallinson’s ‘ Smugglers’ Song,’ sung with great freedom and vigour, was the most preferable number. A most amusing musical novelty was provided by a party of boys, who, under their leader, converted a selection into a highly diverting number by playing aheacj of an air played on a piano. Various instruments, played by hand, were used to give the offering effect. ‘ Sans Souci Gavotte,’ by Samt-George, was well played as a pianoforte duet by S. Young and B. Ruff. The next contribution was the ‘ Lament of Flora Macdonald,’ which was more than creditably given by the choir, and to it was added ‘ An Irish Cradle Song.’ Mr A. C.. Logan’s violin solo was especially welcomed, and he had to repeat it. A ‘Dick Whittington ’ sketch by the boys met with great favour. The tiyo songs, ‘ Passing By 5 and ‘ Bonnie Wee Thing,’ served to introduce a boy soloist, N. Adams, who possesses a voice of rare quality for one so young. A chorus was then'supplied by the choir. A large number of the senior boys gave a very interesting physical culture display, the movements being gone through with precision and uniformity. R. Thomson played a pianoforte solo, the_ selection being Paderewski’s Minuet in G,’ and _ the choir completed the first portion of the programme by singing ‘ 0 Mistress Mine ’ and ‘ Sigh No More, Ladies,’ G. Grimsdnle sang ‘ Annie Laurie ’ and ‘ Over the Sea to Skye ’ in pleasing fashion, and Messrs T. R. Buxton, A. C. Logan, and A. H. Williams completed the evening’s music by singing Abt’s ‘ Shepherd’s Song ’ as a trio. The remaining item was an amusing one-act play entitled ‘ Rory Aforesaid,’ in which the characters were portrayed by G. Riley, C. G. Begg, I. Ross, R. T. C. Armstrong, W. S. Gilkison, and H. Boyes. Mr T. S._ Holme played the pianoforte accompaniments.
