STREET WIDENING

INFORMATION FOR COUNCIL The following recommendations will be submitted to the next meeting of the City Council by the works section of the Public Works and Water Committee : That the offer of Mr T. J. Browne to sell to the council a portion of the frontage to his property, 16 Tennyson street (.22 of a pole), for the purpose of widening the street, be and is accepted. This is one of t|iree frontages to Tennyson street, of'which portions are required to widen the street. Negotiations are proceeding with respect to the two others. In connection with the widening of the bends in the North road between Normanhy and the Upper Junction it is necessary, in order to make a good curve at the gully near the water trough about three-quarters of a mile up from Normanhy, to acquire two portions of land. The total area of about .07 acres will be required to. be purchased for street purposes and a fur-ther-area of .11 acres is required for battering, although the batter can remain on the existing owner’s land in lieu of the land being transferred to the council. The owner is willing to forego any claim for compensation provided the council continues the piping of the natural water course for about 160 ft into the owner’s property, and the committee begs to recommend accordingly. The estimated cost of the necessary work is £32. The report states also that an offer by Mr C. D. Gunn to dedicate to the council, free of compensation, a portion of his land at the corner of Hamilton road and Every street, together with strip Bin width along Hamilton road, the whole containing 1.11 poles, has been accepted by the committee for the purpose of widening these streets. In return the owner’s request that a concrete wall with jarrah fence bo erected along the new boundary has been agreed to. The necessary work, which includes rock excavation, involves an expenditure of £99, and will not be put in hand till the next financial year.
