HALLOWE'EN

Hallowe’en, with its old customs, rites, and superstitions, dates back to very ancient times. It is recorded that Druids celebrated Hallowe’en witli holy fires, burnt offerings, and superstitious observances. Such fancies as witches, goblins, warlocks, elves, and fairies were supposed to Hold high revels under no less a leader than ‘‘ Auld Nick ” himself. In later yes.rs it took the form of an evening given over to games, dancing, and feasting. To-day these games are not kept up, so it falls to the lot of the various Scottish societies to keep their memory green. The Dunedin Burns Club will endeavour, at its celebration in His Majesty’s Theatre on Wednesday evening nest, to give some idea of these customs, and by a night of_ music, dancing, and games, to revive past memories.

The evening’s entertainment will take the form of a kitchen party, and as a strong cast has been secured the dialogue will be merry and bright. Aunt Janet (Mrs D. Carty), Uncle John (Mr G. Paterson, Gore), Mr J. Paterson (the sailor), Mr G. Wiseman (Sheila, the maid), and the son (Mr G. Currie) are the principals. Solos will he rendered bv Misses Mary Pratt, Mary Somerville, Ruby Baxter, Messrs W. H. M'Kenzie, C. Hawes, and J. Swan. Humour will be the predominating feature, and Messrs J. Paterson and G. Wiseman will also entertain with songs. Violin solos will he rendered by Mr J. Clark, and a reel party will dance a national reel. A real oldtime night may he looked forward io.
