OLD-TIME DANCE

The last cf the old-time dances held by the Otago Early Settlers’ Association to raise money to relinquish the debt on its present buildings took the form of fancy dress, and took place in the Early Settlers’ Hall last evening. There was a large attendance of young and old alike, and all indulged in tlie merriment of the evening to the fullest extent. The percentage in fancy costume was very small, nevertheless some very fine make-ups paraded before the judges in a competition for handsome prizes. The winners are as follow : Misses Woodfield and West in beautiful worked costumes representing “ patches,” Miss Gladys Gray in a long flowing pink robe and white bonnet, and Mrs M'Lauchlan in a costume characteristic of an old lady in early days. Mr T. Roche had no difficulty in winning the men’s section, filling the role of a very old man with bent back and white clay pipe, Mr W. Nicholson gained second prize. The judges—Mesdames Winter, R. W. Brickell, and Mr J. J. Mallard—did nob have an easy task, and their selections were well received. Mr F. W. Knight (president of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association) presented the prizes. The music for the dancing was provided by Mr C, Daggs’s orchestra, and was greatly appreciated, and the M.C.s were Messrs J. W. Baton aiid W. Nicholson. An enjoyable supper was dispensed by the Ladies’ Committee, headed by Mrs Winter. During the evening the president thanked all those who had given their assistance to the association, and stated that over £IOO had been raised from the four dances, held so far in aid of the building fund. The debt on the Early Settlers’ Hall had been wiped off, but there still remained a rather big debt on the Pioneer Hall, which they hoped would be paid off in another two years’ -time.
