HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
The monthly meeting of the committee of the above society was held on Tuesday evening, there being present:—Messrs Trevena (in the chair), Hamel, Nelson, Blackburn, Vickers, Fleming, Attwood, Cameron, Vallange, Strachan, Skene, Rigby, and Dallas, Mesdames Rodger and Rigby, Misses Robertson, M'lntyre, and Cable. It was decided that the society join the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture. Cash donations were received from Lady Ross and Mr G. A. Skene, the latter being elected a life member. Messrs G. Simpson, jun., and J. S. Thomson forwarded a copy of their letter to the mayor m regard to the preservation ot native bcs.i at Ferguson’s Creek. It was resolved to inform them that the society was in sympathy with their efforts to.preserve this bush. The Director of Horticulture, Wellington, wrote advising that he was communicating with the other societies concerned in the Loder Cup competition recommending that, as suggested by this society, the competition for the cup be restricted to the months of October, November, and .December of each year. Several members reported upon their visits to various spring shows in New Zealand, and expressed the opinion that shows staged by the Dunedin Society more than favourably compared with those of other centres. The President reported that he and' Mr John Black had accompanied Mr Guy L. Wilson, the noted Irish daffodil grower, who had' acted as judge at the society’s spring show, upon a trip through Centra] Otago. He stated that Mr Wilson was much impressed with his reception by horticulturists throughout New Zealand, and also with the wonders of the dominion, which he considered the finest country he had seen. Mr Wilson was most favourably impressed with the seedlings raised in New Zealand, and the interest taken in the growing of daffodils by the .people generally. The secretary reported that twentyseven new members had joined since the beginning of the society’s year. It was decided f hat the A. and C. garden competitions be judged during the week ending November 30.
