RED CROSS SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Society was attended by the Rev. Bryan iving {in the chair), Lady Ferguson, Miss Rattray, Miss Williams, Messrs C. B. Smith, J. W. Smcatou, il. E. Barrowclough, and the secretary (Mr E. J. G. Johnston). Letters of thanks were received from the Otago Hospital Board and the Scacliff Hospital, for comforts supplied to soldier patients. In regard to a special case brought to the notice of the society, it was mentioned that a report might shortly bo available from Dr Lyth. In reference to another special case, the chairman reported that some action had already been taken to meet the case.— Action approved. A report was received from Miss R. I. V. Aitkcn on the work done at Gove on behalf of soldier patients in the Gore Hospital. The report was accompanied by a financial statement.—The report and statement were received, and warm references were made to the methodical manner in which Miss Aitken kept her records. Appreciation was also recorded of her services on behalf of the Red Cross at Gore. —A further grant of £lO was unanimously voted for purchase of comforts. Reports from headquarters, Wellington, showed that the Red Cross nurses in the various districts weie very active, and good results were being achieved. In Taranaki the Red Cross nurses had been working in co-opera-tion with the Department of Health, and the Taranaki Red Cross Council was unanimous in declaring that the system was working very well indeed. The council recommended the continuance of the system for a further period. The Director-General of Health, in his annual report stated that the lives of patients had been much brightened by the visits of Red Cross representatives, and ho again wished to record his sincere appreciation of the society’s contribution to the welfare of all patients. A letter was received from headquarters advising that the Empire Red Cross conference would be held in London from May 19 to 24, 19fi0. The matron at Mouteoiilo furnished a satisfactory report. Five patients had been admitted and four discharged There were seventeen patients at present in the home. The Monteeillo Com mittee reported having attended to some matters of detail.—Approved. Lady Ferguson mentioned that sev eral rooms at the home needed renovating.—Miss Williams stated that the work could be done during the annual vacation.—lt was resolved that the matter be brought up later. A satisfactory financial statement was submitted and adopted.
